How to Winterize an Above Ground Pool

As temperatures start to drop and winter approaches, it's important to properly winterize your above-ground pool to protect it from damage and ensure it's ready for the next swimming season.

Step 1: Clean and Balance Water

Use a pool skimmer and vacuum to remove any debris, then test the water for pH, alkalinity and calcium levels. Make sure the water is properly balanced to prevent any potential damage to your pool during the winter.

Step 2: Lower the water level

Once the pool is clean and the water is balanced, you need to lower the water level below the skimming line. Use a submersible pump to lower the water level and ensure it is below the skimmer and return pipe.

Step 3: Disassemble and store accessories

Remove and store all accessories, such as ladders, ropes, and diving boards. Clean and dry accessories thoroughly before storing them in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mold growth.

Step 4: Drain and Winterize Equipment

Disconnect the device and drain any remaining water, then clean the device and store it in a dry place. It's also a good idea to lubricate O-rings and seals to prevent any potential damage during the winter.

      Step 5: Add antifreeze chemicals

Antifreeze chemicals can be added to prevent any potential algae growth and keep the water clean during the winter months. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct dosage and application of antifreeze chemicals.

      Step 6: Cover the pool

Choose a cover that is the right size for your pool and provides a tight seal to prevent any debris from entering the pool during the winter. Secure the cover with a water bag or a cable and winch system to ensure it stays in place throughout the winter.
